Unfortunately, diabetes is becoming a more common than ever before. It’s a condition in which your body is unable to process and maintain glucose properly. Living with diabetes means understanding how to not only treat the condition, but also taking preventive measures to ward off possible complications. Having diabetes can certainly expand a person’s to-do list and overwhelm them as a result. Here are four ways to make your diabetes more manageable.

Eat Well

When you have diabetes, you must be mindful with what you eat. Due to your body’s inability to regulate normal blood sugar levels, what you eat will have a serious impact on your blood sugar levels. In fact, not eating a balanced diet can be deadly. Blood sugar is the main fuel source of the body and our cells heavily depend on it. Make sure to incorporate healthy foods into your diet like whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and nuts. You should eliminate foods that are high in saturated fats and sugar.

Find Out What Is Causing You Stress

Managing diabetes can be stressful, causing all sorts of negative emotions like anxiety, anger, and sadness. In order to keep yourself from becoming overwhelmed, you must first figure out why you’re feeling so poorly. Some reasons may include being anxiety-ridden with having low blood sugar, a fear of being judged by others, or feeling like you have no support. However, know that you’re not alone in this and there are many support groups you can join.

Invest in the Proper Footwear

Diabetes can increase your risk of developing foot issues. Wearing tight, constricting shoes can significantly reduce blood flow, which can cause blood clots. To ward of potential issues, there are multiple types of orthopedic shoes you can choose from. However, some of these shoes can be a little uncomfortable for some people and may require specific socks. There are sports compression socks for both men and women, so consider buying a pair to go with your shoes to increase your comfort.

Be Proactive

Lastly, it’s imperative that you keep your diabetes in check. Monitor your blood sugars regularly and keep accurate track of both your highs and lows. You should be checking your sugars before and after meals and before you go to sleep. Being diabetic is a very stressful thing, but with proper management, you’ll be able to live a normal life. Just make sure to follow your doctor’s orders and recommendations.
