Sudden dull pain can radiate through the tooth and jaw all day long. Sometimes, it’s impossible to visit the dentist immediately, and the only thing you want until you get to the dentist’s office is to relieve that annoying pain.

Fortunately, there are some effective tips that will help you solve this problem.

Mild tooth pain might be the result of certain dental concerns. The main reasons for toothaches include cavities, general sensitivity due to thin enamel, and grinding your teeth.

Keep in mind that these remedies can help only with mild tooth pain. Chronic or severe pain usually means you should turn to your dentist as soon as possible. Home remedies are not a long-term solution which means you can use them for a few days, and then you need to see your dentist.

1. Apply a cold compress

If swollen gums and cheek accompany your tooth pain, you may try to apply a cold compress or ice to the aching area. It will help reduce swelling and relieve pain. Actually, scientists have found that ice is an effective way to reduce almost any type of pain.

2. Use clove oil

Clove oil is another good option to combat tooth pain. This super oil has been used for centuries as it possesses anesthetic and antibacterial properties. Dip a cotton swab into clove oil and apply it directly to the aching area. You need to know that it won’t taste good, but it can help you reduce pain. Most clove oils are concentrated therefore try not to use too much of it as it can provoke irritation.

3. Rinse with a hydrogen peroxide rinse

Hydrogen peroxide rinses are a well-known and effective remedy. Hydrogen peroxide is able to kill bacteria, reduce plaque, and even improve gum inflammation. Dilute the solution of hydrogen peroxide with water and rinse like a mouthwash. Remember, that if you have severe gum inflammation, you need to turn to your family dentist as soon as possible.

4. Try warm saltwater

Saltwater has powerful antiseptic properties which means it can reduce the number of bacteria in your mouth. Just add a 1/2 teaspoon of salt to a cup of water, take a sip of the mixture and swish it in your mouth. Rinse your mouth two to three times a day until you visit your dentist.

5. Turn to an over-the-counter pain reliever

Over-the-counter pain relievers are effective nonetheless. An over-the-counter pain reliever is able to eliminate tooth pain as well as reduce swelling and inflammation.

6. Use a peppermint tea bag as a compress

Peppermint has a lot of healing benefits. This plant is able to kill bad bacteria in the mouth. Let the peppermint tea bag cool until it’s slightly warm and then hold it over the aching area to relieve pain. Or you can put the teabag in the freezer for a couple of minutes to chill it and then apply to your aching tooth.

7. Avoid foods and beverages that can exacerbate pain

Some foods and drinks can make tooth pain worse. Try to avoid foods rich in sugar and acids like citrus fruits. Sugar and acids can irritate the aching area. Also, don’t consume too hot or too cold foods and drinks as the temperature can exacerbate pain as well.

Keep in mind that these remedies are good as temporary options. If you have a toothache, it always means you need dental treatment. Therefore, the best way to get rid of tooth pain all together is to visit a dentist for a correct diagnosis.
