Taking your entire lifestyle into account can motivate you to change some of your habits. Not all habits are bad, but there are always better ones we can adopt before the end of 2020. These small lifestyle adjustments will improve your mental, physical and emotional health.

Wellness habits begin with being accountable

If you want to start the habit transformation right, you need to take your entire lifestyle into consideration. Analyze your eating habits, movement and exercise, stressors, sleeping, drinking, hobbies, and past time activities. Write down a shortlist of things you do daily and see which habits can be improved, changed, and upgraded. Take responsibility for your habits to be able to learn which wellness habits to adopt for the end of 2020 and well beyond.

Hydrate often and drink more water

We need to be conscious of our water drinking habits and make sure we hydrate our bodies throughout the day. Drinking a glass of water should be one of the priorities upon waking up. Water is an essential element because it helps our body remove toxins, our joints need it to work properly, cells within our body need it to. We simply can’t live without water. Set up an alarm every one to two hours to remind yourself to drink a tall glass of water. Aim to reach 2 liters per day for optimal results.

Work on your diet

Your diet should be a balanced one, rich in essential nutrients and tolerant of the occasional indulgence. This means that it shouldn’t be restrictive nor eat-anything-you want kind. You should eat for energy, not for the dress or eat your emotions away. Think of the three different kinds of breakfast, lunch, and dinner you like and plan a daily menu with these in mind. This will make your meal planning a lot easier and you’ll also be in control of what you eat. 

Pay attention to your skincare

When you decide to change your lifestyle habits for healthier ones to improve your wellness, you need to pay attention to your skincare. The quality of life is shown on your skin. If you take care of yourself, eat right, drink water, sleep right, stress-less, and nourish yourself right, your skin will be radiant. If it’s the opposite, your skin will be dull, flaky, and prone to premature aging. Once you start changing your diet and improve hydration, your skin will thank you for it. You should also invest in the right skincare and fortify the effects of your lifestyle change. 

Take a break from staring at your screen

If the first thing you do upon waking up is to grab your phone and check your social media, it’s high time to change that. By the end of the day, you’ll end up spending up to six hours on screen time. Imagine how many things you could do in six hours every day. To improve your mental health and overall wellbeing, you should take a break from staring at the screen. Limit screen time by setting limitations on your phone. Also, try blocking out time in your day when phones aren’t allowed. 

Lavish yourself with some love and care

There are good days and there are occasional bad days. For one reason or the other, we label some days as bad, even though they probably aren’t;t. When you catch yourself falling into a bad mood because of something someone said or did at work, try to turn your day around by remembering all the compliments you received. Write down a list of lovely compliments you received at any moment of your life. Whenever you need a quick pick-me-up and some TLC, take out this sheet of paper and read these compliments. Just remind yourself of who you are and turn your mood around.

Get up and stretch

Instead of checking your phone first thing in the morning, do some light stretches instead. People change a number of sleeping positions during the night, which can cause a stiff neck, backaches, and other mild stiffness. Add a sedentary lifestyle into the mix, and you’ll need to schedule daily stretching sessions to improve your wellness. Proper stretching exercises prescribed by a skilled physio will relieve pain, reduce stiffness, and improve mobility. You should also include light stretches throughout your day so you’ll break out of a viscous sedentary cycle at work.

Break a sweat

There’s a saying that is definitely food for thought – ”You don’t stop moving from growing old, you grow old from stopping moving!”. This means that once we stop working on our strength, stamina and physical health, our health will decline. That’s why exercising is a must if you want to be strong, healthy and develop a strong immune system. Try to move as much as you can every day and schedule 3 to 4 workouts a week to improve your wellness.

Set up a sleep routine

Lastly, the ultimate form of self care is having a healthy sleep routine. Going to sleep at odd hours won’t replenish your energy for the upcoming day. What’s more, you’ll constantly struggle with focus, productivity and energy needed for everyday challenges. Adults need between seven to nine hours of sleep every night.  To achieve this, try going to sleep at a fixed time so you’ll be able to get the amount of sleep your body needs and craves to function properly.
