The first mentions of green tea as the elixir of longevity appeared in Japanese literature in the 12th century. And today we still drink green tea, which has impressive abilities – from losing weight to reducing the risk of cancer.

Green tea is made from the same plant Camellia sinensis, like its more famous brother – black tea. And despite the fact that the advantages of this drink are often exaggerated, an increasing number of studies show that green tea has a lot of useful properties.

Protects the Heart

Of course, long-term and large-scale studies are needed to confirm the effect of green tea on heart health. But the preliminary results, however, look promising.

One study found that black and green teas have a beneficial effect on lipid levels and decrease high blood pressure. And a recent report by Harvard Medical School shows that flavonoids in green tea help to reduce inflammation, which, in turn, decreases the accumulation of harmful substances in the arteries. In addition to this, green tea improves the antioxidant functions of the blood, reducing cholesterol levels, which is directly related to the reduced risk of cardiovascular diseases.

Cares for the Oral Cavity

Studies have shown that polyphenols in green tea have an antimicrobial and deodorizing effect, which can neutralize volatile sulfur compounds that cause bad breath. Green tea also has an antiviral effect and can affect both bacteria and fungi. In fact, the antiviral properties of green tea are, perhaps, the most supported by science from the entire list.

Contributes to Slimming

But this is not what you thought. You shouldn’t perceive green tea as a wonder drug that helps the body to burn more calories, because it is wrong and even dangerous. It is about replacing for a while all other drinks that you used to drink with green tea without sugar.

Polyphenols, which are contained in green tea in large quantities, contribute to increased heat exchange in the body due to the processing of fat deposits. Studies have shown that if you drink 3 to 6 cups of green tea per day, the amount of fat burning will increase by about 45%.

Another advantage of green tea lies in the ability to reduce blood sugar levels, this process leads to suppressing hunger. It’s enough to drink a cup of green tea half an hour before meals so that you can eat much less food than usual during lunch.

Reduces the Risk of Cancer Occurrence

Green tea contains many polyphenolic compounds, such as antioxidants, which reduce the development of chronic diseases by improving the cellular function of tissues.

But why tea? The secret is that, unlike fruits and vegetables containing no less than polyphenols, but green tea contains a lot of catechins (natural antioxidants that can reduce the number of free radicals in the body). According to some studies, green tea may be useful in reducing the risks associated with lung cancer, pancreatic cancer, and colorectal cancer.

Helps the Brain Function

Green tea contains caffeine, which is known for its stimulating properties, so this does not seem surprising that it increases our brain activity. But green tea also contains L-Theanine, which increases the amount of gamma-aminobutyric acid in the brain, contributing to calm and relaxation. But remember that green tea contains caffeine, so if you decide to reduce its consumption for one reason or another, it is important to monitor the number of cups per day.
