One of the most common goals that people make for their New Year’s Resolutions is to lose weight. Everyone wants to look good and feel good about themselves and about their bodies. With the holidays behind us, it’s time to start working towards our goal weight and put away our unhealthy habits. If you made the New Year’s Resolution goal to lose weight and you’ve already fallen short, that’s fine. Just because you fall down once doesn’t mean that you’re stuck on the floor. Pick yourself back up and start all over. Here are the best ways that you can pick yourself up, start living a healthy lifestyle, and lose weight the right way.

1. Make Exercise a Habit

How do you know when exercise has become a habit for you? It’s a habit when you don’t have to think about going to the gym anymore–you just do it. You might not love it yet, but you’re committed to going, and nothing (even rain pounding on the windows) is going to stop you from working out that day. Exercise has been proven to be the most effective way to live a healthy lifestyle. You can eat healthy and diet, but if you’re not moving your body, you won’t feel the benefits of eating the right foods.

Your body was designed to move, not to sit. Get it up and moving for at least 30 minutes a day. If you’re struggling with exercising, then do something less strenuous that still requires you to be on your feet. You could go for a 30-minute walk every day, or do yoga in your backyard. Find the type of exercise that works for you and run with it. It’s important that for at least 3 of the days out of the week you’re doing a form of exercise that does get your heart pumping and your skin sweating.

2. Eat the Right Kinds of Food

Going on an extreme diet that limits your caloric intake to 500 calories a day is the wrong way to lose weight. The right thing to do is to create a sustainable lifestyle that can support a healthy life. What you should do is give the foods that you eat a complete makeover. Cut out the processed foods and focus on whole foods like grains, fruits, vegetables, and things that feel good to eat.

Junk foods usually sit in your gut and make you feel gross 30 minutes after you’ve eaten it. That’s what you want to avoid–anything that makes you feel like trash. 3. Get Enough Sleep

When you get the right amount of sleep, your metabolism is able to work quickly which means that you burn more calories throughout the day. It also helps you with digestion and reduces gastrointestinal pains and discomforts. Sleep also improves your mood, helps you to retain information better, and helps you to process traumatizing events or situations. Get the right amount of sleep, and you’ll be surprised what it does for you.


If losing weight is your goal, you should make sure that you’re doing it in a way that your body thanks you. Steer clear of “fad” diets or extreme diets since it’s bad for your body. The best way to lose weight is gradually in a way that you’ll be to sustain long after you’ve hit your goal.
