Your overall health will eventually show up on your skin. That being said, there are things you can do, and not do, that will contribute to wrinkles. Stopping them is easier than getting rid of them, so plan ahead.

Sunlight

Get a big hat and use sunscreen. The hat doesn’t have to be pretty, but protecting your skin from sunlight is a great first start to preventing the formation of wrinkles. A tanned and healthy glow in your 20s can lead you to a badly wrinkled face by your 50s. If you feel you have to have a tan to be healthy, consider sunless tanning lotions.

Oxidative Stress

Toxins steal your health from the outside in. Activities like drinking too much alcohol and smoking are hard on more than your liver, stomach, heart, and lungs. Quitting smoking is the number one thing you can choose to do if you want to avoid facial wrinkles over time, particularly around your mouth and eyes.

Cleansers

Use a gentle cleanser every day. If you wear makeup, try to take it off as soon as you get home to give your skin time to breathe. An exfoliating scrub and healing mask are a good option on the weekend if you have time, but thoroughly washing your face with gentle soap at the end of the day is a great habit to get into.

Serums and Toners

A serum is designed to soak into the skin and is a great choice for delicate skin, such as around the eyes and on the skin around the lips. A toner is a liquid that removes oil, restores the pH balance of your skin, and can exfoliate. Do you really need these products? Serums may not be necessary when younger, but if you struggle with the weight of moisturizer, a serum is a good option. If your skin is dry and tight after washing, toner can bring it back into balance.

Moisturize

A moisturizer can deliver the healing products of a serum, but it also contains a protective coating that holds the healing products close to the skin. It’s possible to spend a great deal of money on a variety of moisturizers and feel sticky, rather than feeling protected. To make the best investment

  • look for unscented products
  • try to find a sample or buy the smallest container possible
  • test a bit on the inside of your elbow at the beauty counter

The skin on your face is not like the skin on your body, but the inside of your elbow is probably sheltered from the sun and likely to respond as the skin on your face would. If you’re going to have a reaction to something, your elbow is better! Test it, and if you don’t react or feel sticky within an hour, try a small container of the moisturizer.

Treat Yourself

Sometimes, there’s nothing better than a spa day. Find a skilled massage professional and try a non surgical facelift. As you relax, professionals will apply a mild and painless microcurrent of energy to your facial muscles to reduce the appearance of wrinkles in your skin. A fully relaxed body and younger-looking face? That is some spa day!

Diet

We are what we eat in many ways. A diet high in antioxidants can do a lot to prevent the formation of wrinkles. Avoid processed sugars and stick to whole grains when possible. On a weekly basis, try to add foods such as

  • apples
  • blueberries
  • avocadoes
  • salmon, and
  • spinach

to your diet. Not only will this boost your Vitamin and fiber intake, but you can easily increase your omega 3 fatty-acid intake by adding salmon to your dinner rotation once or twice a week.

Whenever possible, buy and eat organic produce. Carefully wash everything you bring home before you ingest it. If you can’t buy fresh, wild-caught salmon, consider buying the flash-frozen product.

The best way to fight aging tomorrow is to work to be healthy today. Protect your face from sunlight and do your best to stay away from tobacco products. Eat a diet high in fresh fruits and vegetables and try to cut down on processed sugars. Use gentle cleansers and shop around for a moisturizer you can tolerate. Finally, treat yourself!
