Killing The Flu With Plants
Everyone scurries around like cockroaches in full panic mode. Why you ask? Each morning, people come across yet a new article about tons of people suddenly dropping dead from the infamous influenza. Mothers are locking their little ones and themselves inside their houses.
Nurses are sprinting around from one room to the other in flu masks. Tons of people are hectically driving to their nearest Walgreens or CVS to get their flu shot. People are going mad over this influenza outbreak, however; it’s spreading much more quickly than the CDC is comfortable with.
I am not trying to frighten you all into a heart attack even more than you probably are over this outbreak. I simply am a realist and am only stating my observations. However, what if I told you that you can roundhouse kick the flu’s butt without the sketchy medicine known as Tamiflu?
You’d probably roll your eyes at me and say , Again with the natural stuff Victoria ?
Yes AGAIN with alternative medicine as it is inexpensive, treating the body like a temple as it should be , and being immune-boosting!! Now c’mon, stop dragging your feet and whining to get some over-the-counter medicine when I can offer you some insight on natural alternatives!
Before we get into the whole rundown of how to kick the flu’s butt; let’s go about recognizing influenza symptoms shall we?
For two reasons: firstly, everyone has different influenza symptoms. Secondly, we need to treat the illness and symptoms not just the symptoms as pharmaceutical medicines typically do.
According to Mayo Clinic the flu symptoms are “fever, chills, muscle aches, runny nose, congestion, headaches, and fatigue”.
The Natural & Safe Solution: Killing The Flu with Plants & Other Remedies
Yay. Influenza sounds like so much fun. Not. Let’s talk about what we can do to kick it to the curb as typing about the influenza virus just makes me not want to get it. Sheesh!
I hate fevers. Especially the head-blazing type that make you feel as if you just need to lay down or else you’re going to explode from burning your head off! Newsflash : you don’t need to start treating the fever until you or your child start to show discomfort (usually around 102-103 degrees is when).
Letting a fever run its course is very beneficial for the immune system as it kicks into high gear and increases the production of white blood cells to kick that nasty virus!
Apple Cider Vinegar
Everyone is constantly blabbing about the benefits of Apple Cider Vinegar as really, it is a good thing to always have on hand. I personally use this old gem for when I get an ear-splitting fever. I pour about 1.5 cups of Apple Cider Vinegar in the bath tub, sit down, close my eyes, and try not to doze off in the bathtub.
**You can also make a compress with it too. The only difference between bath time with apple cider vinegar and a compress is a compress is just a towel that you dunk the apple cider vinegar and water solution onto a towel and put it on the back of the neck!**
Muscle Aches and Headaches
No one likes body aches of ANY kind! It just makes you grumpy and want to isolate yourself in your bedroom only coming out to eat.
Epsom Salts or also known as “bath salts” are very effective in combating any type of aches; especially headaches. A lot of times when our body is aching, we are lacking magnesium.
Guess what Epsom Salts contain? MAGNESIUM SULFATE . Ding ding ding!!
Same concept as Apple Cider Vinegar baths; put amount stated on the package into warm bath water, sit back, and take a short cat nap for 20 minutes while your body soaks up that magnesium!
Another common situation for body aches is that our bodies are dehydrated. Our bodies NEED water as 55%-60% of our body is water weight!
When you are sick, your body is weaker and more prone to becoming dehydrated. Keep pushing fluids on you and your children. It’ll help with replenishing your cells and relieving those not so pleasant aches. While you’re at it, cat naps also help with headaches. Sometimes, we just have to recharge.
Congestion and Runny Nose
Whenever I have a runny nose, I just hide away until I’m better while practicing these methods as I don’t want to contaminate anyone and have people witness me wiping my nose with my shirt. Disgusting I know. Okay, enough with the gross habits I don’t want to scare you away now. I don’t think that’s good to do when I am trying to help you out.
Vitamin C is naturally immune boosting. Whether you want to go about getting the supplement sodium ascorbate or buying all of the citrus fruits at the store to make smoothies: it is completely your call! However you want to put in extra Vitamin C just make sure you do it!!
Eat More Turmeric, Cayenne Pepper, and Ginger
All of these foods contain natural antioxidants, are antiseptic, and anti-inflammatory agents!! Everytime I feel under the weather, I always make some Thai Curry.
Disclaimer: I may add much more ginger, chillies, and turmeric than necessary but I hate being sick as everyone else does and am pretty desperate to do whatever I need to do to get it out of my system. Cooking Thai Curry alone will open your sinuses up, I guarantee it!!
Salt Water Saline Solution
No. You are not going to put salt water on a wound or canker sore. For some reason everyone has so much aversion whenever anyone mentions salt and water together (myself included). Instead of causing yourself pain today, we can make a saline solution out of salt and water.
Put the solution in your nose. The saline solution will thin out the mucus; causing a lot of it to come out a lot faster than just manually blowing your nose with a whole box of tissues! However, make sure it is properly diluted.
I suggest looking up the specific age and recommendation of dilution as it will obviously have more salt for an adult than a child. That’s it! Talk about being frugal and natural!
If I had to say the worst symptom of any illness including the flu it will always hands down be fatigue and nausea. I don’t know what it is about it, it just is absolutely the most miserable symptom for me.
Peppermint tea not only tastes amazing but it also gives me a nostalgic feeling of Christmas and candy canes. It also contains calming agents and antispasmodic properties; making you not so nauseous and feeling under the weather. It was the only liquid I could hold down when I was pregnant with my first child.
Children. We are not grabbing charcoal off the grill and slapping our tongues in the grill full of charcoal. Activated charcoal is a bit different and you know, safer to consume than grill charcoal. Activated charcoal is a lovely supplement commonly used in emergency rooms whenever someone overdoses, is experienced to a lot of pollutants by diet, and when throwing up is the only thing you can do.
This wonderful supplement, once absorbed in your body, absorbs the bad toxins everywhere in your body (amazing for gut health as well). However, it mainly targets the main source of toxicity. I use this as well whenever I get a really bad case of food poisoning or the nasty flu bug!
Best for Last : Oscillococcinum
For those of you who are a bit on the other side of trying herbal concoctions or random things you’ve never heard of until now in your life: you can find this at Wal-Mart, you local pharmacy, or at online pharmacies.
This bad boy right here is a homeopathic remedy that is specifically made for flu-like symptoms.
Wrong! While they are both made of herbs, homeopathic remedies are a lot more advanced medicinally.
They don’t use toxic ingredients as pharmaceutical medicines do and don’t have nearly as many side effects. Homeopathic remedies also go off of what symptoms the person in distress has, not the illness. As everyone experiences different symptoms with the same illness.
Now that I have given you a little list of what has worked for me and others, give me your list of what works for you! What have you used to combat the flu? Have you used any of the ones listed in this article?
