Imagine waking up one morning and realizing that your legs don’t work like they used to before. You call your family for help, and they quickly take you to the doctor, who then diagnoses you with Arthritis.

Arthritis is a chronic disease that has plagued humanity for over three decades. Although Medicine has created drugs to cure the problem, the depression of suffering from the condition can leave a person feeling devastated.

That’s why I’ve taken the liberty to compile some useful tips to make coping with the disease more bearable.

Let’s begin.

What Is Arthritis?

According to Mayoclinic.org, “Arthritis is the swelling and tenderness of one or more of your joints.” The health blog further states that the main symptoms of the disease include joint pains, swelling, and stiffness, which gradually worsen as the sufferer advances in age.

How To Cope With Arthritis

You’ll want to avoid exerting unnecessary stress on your joints while undergoing treatment. Stress will not only cause more damage but also slow down the recovery process.

I also recommend that you keep away from movements or positions that require you to put extra stress on your joints. For instance, trying to open the tight lid of a jar is not healthy for your wrist and fingers. Instead, you can either get a wall-mounted jar opener or set the jar on a cloth, rest your palm on it, then turn the lid using shoulder motion.

Also, remember to keep your muscles active because a lack of physical activity or mild exercises will not only compound the problem but also increase your risk of other undesirable health conditions.

That your joints are undergoing treatment doesn’t mean you should spend your entire day lying in bed or watching TV on the couch. According to Health.havard.edu, “Avoid holding one position for too long, get up and stretch every 15 minutes.” Do the same while sitting, reading, or watching television.”

Even if you work from home and you find that you’re not exactly motivated to get up and move around, consider setting reminders to enable you to get up and walk around for a bit. That way, you’ll not only be taking steps towards mitigating arthritis, you’ll also be increasing blood flow to your body, and your overall heart health.

Also, it would be helpful to remind you that while your drugs do their best to bring you back to good health, consider playing your part by giving your body a healthy balanced diet. This balanced meal helps you maintain a healthy weight and also supplies your body with the nutrients essential to its recovery.

Remember that too much weight will put unnecessary pressure on your hips, knees, ankles, and feet, and it could be detrimental to your recovery.

Don’t Reject Help

Trying to prove your independence despite having a challenging condition like Arthritis isn’t the best for you. That’s why medical experts advise that you enlist the support of your family and friends by educating them on the disease and its limitations. Your family and friends can play an active part in your recovery.

That said, while doing my research for this article, I found out that besides treatments like painkillers, and anti-inflammatory pills, mobile apps can make coping with Arthritis easy. There’s a list of these apps available online, so I’ll leave the link below:
