Following a car accident, you could experience pain for years, and you need to take steps to protect your health if you want to avoid long-term complications. With natural pain management techniques, you can improve your quality of life while avoiding the unwanted side effects from painkillers.

Heat and Ice Packs

As long as your injuries aren’t severe, you might be able to speed up your recovery by alternating heat and ice packs. While everyone has different needs, most healthy adults should try to drink a minimum of eight full glasses of water per day. You might need to drink quite a bit more than that if you are severely injured, physically active, or taking painkillers.

Improve Your Diet

What you eat can affect how inflamed your body is, which in turn directly affects your pain levels. Some doctors may recommend a strict diet that reduces red meat, dairy, simple carbohydrates, and sugar. Instead, you should eat plenty of vegetables, fruits, and clean fish. One positive side effect of healthier eating is weight loss. If you are carrying around extra weight, shedding some of that may also help with your pain levels.

In addition, if you are a smoker, going through your regular pack of cigarettes a day won’t help with the pain. Smoking worsens circulation, making it difficult for oxygen and nutrients to reach the tissue. Additionally, alcohol is a big no if you are trying to use your diet for pain management. Alcohol makes it difficult to sleep, and sleep is vital to helping your body heal and recover from various ailments.

If your insurance provider doesn’t cover acupuncture, then you should contact an attorney who has experience with car accident law. A knowledgeable attorney will negotiate with the insurance company on your behalf and potentially increase the amount of compensation that you receive. While these techniques can be highly effective, you should heed all of your doctor’s instructions as well. Some health complications require professional treatments, and these natural methods might not help you if you haven’t addressed the root causes of your injuries.
