Overly sensitive teeth is a problem familiar to many people. It is very unpleasant and is always a warning symptom that something is wrong with your dental health. In very rare cases, it can be genetically predetermined, but if not, the first thing you should do as you feel it is to visit your dentist. 

In most cases, teeth react with pain to certain types of food and drinks. Very cold or hot, sour or sweet products are aggressive to our dental enamel. But when you do nothing about your sensitivity and let it progress, one day every meal may become a torture. This is why the first signs of sensitivity are a call for immediate action.

What Causes Teeth Sensitivity?

Excluding the genetic issues, which rarely happen, here is the list of possible causes for increased teeth sensitivity. None of them are good and normal and require your attention and correction.

  • Dental diseases (cavities, periodontitis, etc.)
  • Damaged dental enamel
  • Smoking
  • Mental disorders
  • Metabolic problems

However, in some cases, dental sensitivity can appear due to improper dental care. In these cases, the correction of your general and dental care will eliminate the problem. Of course, that is if you do it in time and don’t let it progress into a serious disease.

The food you eat matters. Your body needs to receive all the required nutrients to be healthy. If you are fond of low-calorie diets, or, on the contrary, eat junk food, you’re most likely not getting enough of the needed nutrients. When this happens, your teeth are the first to suffer. Improper nutrition can even lead to complete tooth loss, therefore, to avoid the installation of full denture implants, visit a nutritionist and make some dietary changes. 

Also, if you are very concerned about the color of your teeth and fond of the teeth whitening procedures, after a while, you might experience the problem of sensitivity because of this. Teeth whitening is something you should be very careful with because it can be aggressive to the teeth enamel.

How to Reduce Teeth Sensitivity at Home

As you already understand, teeth sensitivity is a problem that needs a medical solution. But there is something you can do at home to help it. These natural remedies won’t solve your initial problem but at least will relieve the discomfort you feel from eating.

Herbal brews

These herbs are the best for relieving the discomfort from increased dental sensitivity:

  • White oak bark – works as an antiseptic, soothes the inflammation and pain.
  • Sage – reduces the sensitivity and kills bacteria.
  • Chamomile – is good for your oral hygiene in general and also has an antiseptic effect.
  • Calendula – strengthens the enamel and calms down the pain.

You can use them separately or all together for irrigation. Boil a tablespoon of herb in a cup of water and let sit for an hour, then rinse your mouth. 

Tea tree oil

You don’t need more than three drops per glass of water. Use this rinse no less than 4 times a day. Tea tree oil will reduce your dental sensitivity, strengthen your dental enamel and refresh your breath.

Eggplant skin

You will need to collect the skin from eggplants you cook and dry it. Once it’s completely dry, process it into a powder and cook a brew the same way you do with herbs. This solution will strengthen your dental enamel and your gums will thank you too.

It’s important to understand that these recipes are NOT treatments. They will only help to relieve the pain of your overly sensitive teeth, but it doesn’t mean that they will help you avoid the necessary dental procedures to actually take care of the problem.
