As a woman, you have special health needs, and it’s important to take control of your health. You may not even know you have a problem until it’s too late. To stay on top of things, you should get regular doctor visits. Here are four health checks every woman should get, even when you feel fine.

Mammogram

A mammogram is a screening of the breast that looks for signs of breast cancer, such as a tumor. Breast cancer is the second leading cause of death in adult women. However,  many  deaths could be prevented with earlier detection. If your mammogram shows signs of breast cancer, your doctor will talk to you about your treatment options. Often, women can simply go through surgery to remove the cancer if caught soon enough.

Pelvic Exam

A woman’s private area is special to her, and it’s important for it to be well taken care of. It’s recommended that women get regular gynecological exams about once a year once they turn 21 or after they become sexually active. The exam can help ensure that you do not have an STI. The exam can also ensure that bacteria levels are at a normal level. Finally, and most importantly, the pelvic exam will check for uterine cancer or other problems with the reproductive organs.

Bone Density

Women are far more likely than men to get osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is the severe weakening of the bones. It can make them brittle and more liable to break. Weak bones will also be more difficult to heal. Osteoporosis mostly affects women over the age of 65, but it can affect younger women, too.

A bone density screening will tell you exactly how sturdy your bones are. If you catch a bone problem early, your doctor may have some solutions for you to help get them stronger.

Skin Examination

Many women sit out in the sun to get a sun-kissed glow to their skin. However, the sun can cause some unwanted results, too. Get regular skin examinations to ensure that no moles show any indication of skin cancer.

Skin cancer moves quickly. You want to catch it as soon as possible. You should get regular screenings, but you should also check yourself for moles that change color, shape, or size.

Many women remember to visit the dentist for their yearly cleanings and their family doctor for their annual checkups, but there are more health checks you should be getting regularly. You can’t control everything about your health, but you can control some things. Go out of your way to stay ahead of things by getting regular preemptive checks.
