So you want to make the first step to losing weight. Good for you! Even making this decision is sometimes hard. But what happens after? It’s not as if a decision alone will you take you anywhere – there is no magic wand to wave and all the extra fat goes away. But browsing the Interwebs and looking for a solution, you might feel disheartened seeing that most of the advice is geared towards those who are only overweight – maybe obese. But that’s not you. Don’t worry – if you have a significant amount of weight to lose, it’s possible, however unlikely it seems at the moment, especially if your movement is limited. Here’s where you need for starting your weight loss journey and how to persevere.
Determine Your Why
Okay, you want to lose weight – but why so? If you’re surprised by this question, it just means you haven’t cleared it out to yourself. To really make it happen and believe you will lose weight, you need to know why you want that. Do you want to be healthier? Do you want to live longer? Perhaps spend more time with your children or grandchildren? Stay around for them longer? Or set a good example for them?
Once you are aware of the reason behind you wanting to lose weight, it will really help with your determination, as well as your confidence to really achieve what you’re after.
Find the Right Doctor
And by right, we mean specialist. Your GP will be a great starting point, as well a person who will be there for you for check-ups for your overall health (not to be missed!). But there are experts who specialise in what you need, and that’s treatment of obesity and the conditions that come with it. They are also more effectively equipped to help you in the process of losing a lot of weight, and they know what you’re dealing with.
They can inform you of the benefits of gastric band surgery, an option helps those morbidly obese people who have struggled for years to finally set the weight loss journey on the right path.
Learn How to Eat Well
Very rare are the people who are obese but eat good, healthy food, prepared in the best ways. Since eating well is your best bet not only to lose weight, but to keep your results once you’re happy with them, you will need to learn how to eat well. Learn about macronutrients, what they are and why they are important for keeping you alive (and healthy and functional). Learn about energy and calories and how much energy you need to intake to be able to function depending on your lifestyle. And finally, don’t be lazy and start trying out recipes. There’s so much more food than pizza!
Get Medical Oversight
Even if you are not planning on having a surgery, if you are morbidly obese, you will need support from a doctor. You might have noticed already that this weight comes with a number of health issues; if not, that’s great, but that’s a risk and it’s important to have a doctor who knows about your health status in the beginning, and who can also monitor it throughout the process – to make sure everything is going according to the plan and your body is responding well to everything you’re putting it through. Because remember, losing weight, no matter how great for your overall health and being, is a stress for the body. A good doctor will work with you to minimize it.
This might be difficult to start with, especially if you find it hard to walk to another room in the house. Talk to your doctor about it – you don’t want to hurt yourself! If you can, walk around the house, every day for a while. Then try walking around the block. Little by little, you’ll be able to do more and more. Just find an activity you enjoy, or at least semi-enjoy. Persisting with something you detest will only set you back in your journey.
Starting Your Weight Loss Journey – You Can Do It!
The journey you are undertaking is not an easy one: it requires dedication, determination, planning, commitment. It will not be smooth, and there will be times you wish you had never started in the first place. Then remember your Why, accept your mistakes and move on.
