The body changes in many different ways as we grow older. Reduced mobility caused by joint pain and weak muscles is an age-related change. Stiff, painful joints and weakening muscles limit the range of motion and cause us to be unable to do things we once enjoyed doing.

But there are things we can do to improve joint and muscle function. Natural methods of treatments that will reduce pain and inflammation, strengthen muscles and allow us to move without pain and stiffness.

Massage Therapy

There are several different types of massages therapies that combine a variety of techniques designed for your specific physical needs. Regular massages can result in a significant reduction of pain and increased range of motions.

When light pressure applied to certain areas of the body during a massage the pressure receptors under the skin alert the brain to release pain and stress-reducing chemicals, like serotonin. Pain and stiffness are alleviated so joint and muscle function can be improved.

Swedish massage, deep tissue massage, hot stone massage and other types of massage therapy are available. You can create a comprehensive treatment to fit your needs.

Anti-Inflammatory Diet

Certain foods can reduce inflammation in the body, which is the primary cause of many health conditions. Keeping inflammation down will improve joint health and reduce pain, and an anti-inflammatory diet will improve overall health.

The Mediterranean diet promotes foods that reduce inflammation and provide many other health benefits. This is not an actual diet, but a way of eating that will help improve health.

Exercise Increases Range of Motion

We often think of exercise as a means of losing weight or gaining muscle strength; it does both and more. Exercise also increases range of motion, plus it causes the body to release ‘feel-good’ hormones called endorphins that reduce pain perception and improve our mood.

Yoga, swimming, or a similar type of exercise that puts the joints and muscles through a full range of motion during a workout will bring about the most improved function.

Maintaining Weight

Losing a few pounds can help reduce pain and improve joint and muscle function. Just an extra 10 pounds increases stress on joints and muscles and causes them to work harder to carry around the extra weight.

A low-fat, heart-healthy diet plan, moderate exercise will help you lose any excess weight and/or maintain a healthy weight.
