Pelvic pain in men is a relatively common issue. It may have a wide range of different symptoms for a variety of different reasons. Pelvic pain can develop after an injury or a period of severe stress. But sometimes pain occurs for an unknown reason. Regardless of the reason, it is important to find the root cause of the pain and treat it. Some causes of pelvic pain can lead toserious health problems if left untreated.

Below are 4 conditions that can cause pelvic pain in men.

1. Prostatitis

Prostatitis is a serious condition. This is an inflammation of the prostate, a small gland in your reproductive system. In this condition, the prostate produces a fluid that goes into semen causing abnormal discharges from the penis. There are a few types of prostatitis which include acute bacterial prostatitis, chronic bacterial prostatitis, and nonbacterial prostatitis.

The symptoms of acute and chronic prostatitis include painful urination, fever, nausea, painful ejaculation, and pelvic pain. Bacterial prostatitis is a serious health condition that requires immediate medical attention. The treatment of bacterial prostatitis usually includes antibiotic therapy to kill harmful bacteria in your prostate.

2. Urinary tract infection

Urinary tract infection is a bacterial infection. This disease most often develops in the bladder but can spread over the urethra, ureters, and kidneys. This is a common cause of lower abdomen or pelvic pain in men. Things like dehydration, sedentary lifestyle, diabetes, and fecal incontinence can make you more susceptible to urinary tract infections.

Along with pelvic pain, you may experience symptoms like:

  • Painful urination
  • Blood in the urine
  • Fever and chills
  • Fatigue
  • Sudden urges to urinate

The treatment of urinary tract infections usually includes antibiotic medications. The therapy usually lasts between 5-10 days. It is also important to drink enough water. Frequent urination can help you flush the bacteria from your system.

3. Hernia

A hernia is the abnormal exit of tissue or an organ, through the wall of the cavity in which it normally resides. The affected area usually forms a small and painful bulge. This bulge becomes less noticeable when you lie down. The pain caused by a hernia may get worse when you strain your muscles. Other symptoms of hernia may include nausea or vomiting, and fever.

It is important to treat this condition because it can be life-threatening. A hernia cannot dissolve on its own and it requires medical attention. To relieve its symptoms the doctor may recommend lifestyle changes. If your condition is severe and interferes with normal living, the doctor may suggest surgery. There are different types of surgeries available to address hernias. The success rate of hernia surgery is very high so you don’t need to be afraid of it.

4. Sexually transmitted infection

Certain sexually transmitted infections like gonorrhea and chlamydia can cause pelvic pain. Other symptoms include painful urination, ejaculation, abnormal discharges from your penis, and genital sores. The main risk factor for STIs is unprotected sex. Condoms dont give you 100 percent protection, but they decrease the risk of infection significantly. Sexually transmitted infections can spread through vaginal, oral, and anal sex.

STIs can increase your risk of heart disease, arthritis, infertility, and certain types of cancer if left untreated. The treatment of UTIs varies based on the type of infection. If you have a bacterial infection the doctor can prescribe you an antibiotic therapy.

It is crucial for your health to identify the underlying cause of pelvic pain. Even seemingly mild diseases like urinary tract infections need to be treated to decrease the risk of serious complications. If you are unsure about the cause of your pelvic pain you need to see a doctor.
