As the spring season begins, you may be concerned over seasonal allergies and how they will affect your life. If you suffer regularly from spring allergies, there are steps that you can take to reduce your unpleasant symptoms so that you can breathe easier and enjoy the return of warmer weather with greater clarity. Here are five easy ways to ease your allergies this spring.

Try to Avoid Going Out at the Worst Times

There are certain times when you should avoid going outdoors if possible so that you’ll be less likely to experience allergy flareups. The Mayo Clinic suggests staying indoors as much as possible on dry and windy days. The early morning is another bad time to go out when pollen counts are usually higher. The best time to go outdoors in the spring is usually after a rainstorm when much of the pollen has been washed away from the air and surfaces. Your local news TV station or website can also inform you of the days when pollen and other allergen counts are expected to be higher so that you can limit your time outdoors.

Take the Right Medications and Remedies

You can find plenty of over-the-counter medicines that are formulated to alleviate allergy symptoms. Some oral antihistamines that were once available by prescription only can now be purchased in drugstores without any prior authorization from a doctor. A cromolyn sodium or similar type of nasal spray can be used to clear nasal congestion and may also relieve headaches that are caused by allergies. If your allergies are particularly severe, you may want to consider visiting your doctor or a local allergist for allergy shots. You can also try taking certain natural supplements that are known to relieve allergy symptoms in some people, and some of the best anti-allergy supplements include evening primrose, butterbur and lemon oil.

Keep Sinuses Clear

Congestion is one of the worst allergy symptoms, and you’ll be able to breathe easier with less runny noses if you make efforts to keep your sinuses clear. In addition to taking decongestion medicines, you can try making a steam bath and inhaling the steam up to four times a day for ten minutes at a time. You can also try rinsing your sinuses with an irrigation device and sterile water that has been boiled and cooled. Sinuses often feel congested because of inflammation, and you can give yourself a nice clearing effect by pushing your tongue flat against the roof of your mouth while simultaneously applying pressure by pressing your index finger between your eyebrows for about 20 seconds.

Clean Your Home with the Best Products and Methods

Cleaning your home is a great way to remove many of the allergens that contribute to your suffering, but there are certain cleaning products and methods that are especially good for keeping allergy symptoms at bay. A solution made with vinegar and salt can make an excellent anti-allergy cleaner that can be used for many surfaces around your home. Furniture can be cleaned with a solution of vegetable oil combined with either olive oil or lemon juice. Miele vacuums work especially well in picking up many of the allergen particles from carpets and rugs. There are even feather dusters that are made to pick up more of the pollen and dust that could be contributing to your symptoms.

Purify Your Indoor Air

In addition to cleaning the furniture and surfaces in your home regularly to alleviate allergy symptoms, you can experience further relief by purifying your indoor air. A dehumidifier or HEPA air filter can work great for purifying the air in many rooms of your home. It’s also important to have your heater, air conditioner, and vents cleaned and maintained sufficiently so that dirty air with allergen particles doesn’t circulate throughout your living space. To keep your indoor air as clean as possible, you should refrain from opening your doors and windows for prolonged periods so that you don’t let a lot of allergens into your home.

You can get through the spring season easier by finding ways to control your allergy symptoms. By discovering what works best for you to alleviate your allergy symptoms, you’ll likely find yourself looking more forward to this time of year.
