An estimated one out of every six adults in the United States suffer from arthritis. If you or a senior loved one have the condition, you know how painful everyday movements can be. These five tips may help relieve your arthritis pain and get you enjoying life once again.

Get More Exercise

It may seem counter-productive when you are in pain, but exercise and movement are one of the best things you can do to relieve arthritis pain. Exercising loosens joints, which decreases pain. It also strengthens bones and muscles and decreases fatigue. Always begin with gentle stretches. Low-impact exercises, such as swimming or walking, are best.

Use Hot or Cold Therapy

The heat helps loosen stiff joints, stimulates circulation and decreases muscle spasms associated with arthritis. Heat therapy may be especially helpful in the morning or after sitting for long periods of time. Heating pads, warm compresses, and hot water bottles are all useful.

Alternately, cold therapy also helps relieve arthritis pain by reducing inflammation. Cold wraps and cold pads make it easier to apply ice and cold compresses to wrists, knees, and hands. You may want to try a combination of hot and cold therapy until you find what best helps you.

Try Topical Creams

There are a variety of topical creams that help treat arthritis in different ways. Some creams target and block certain nerve receptors to relieve pain while others send cool sensations that can help stop arthritis pain. Get a Massage

Most people enjoy massages, and they can be excellent for relieving pain. Massaging the joints can help you or your loved one wind down at the end of the day and sleep better. Maintain a Healthy Weight

Carrying extra weight puts an increased amount of pressure on the joints. This extra pressure causes arthritis symptoms to worsen drastically. Because of how your skeleton carries your weight, losing just one pound decreases the amount of weight on your knees by four pounds.

While it’s tempting, don’t try a fad diet to lose the extra weight. These often don’t work at all and if they do work, the weight will usually come back quickly. Instead, eat a healthful diet, drink water instead of sweetened drinks, and get more exercise to lose weight in a safe, healthy manner. Eating foods with omega-3 fatty acids, such as salmon, be especially helpful for arthritis sufferers.
