Using Breathing Positions


 

These positions are useful if you experience dyspnea in your physical activities, when you are over-excited or tense that needs to be calmed down. There are three main positions: sitting, standing and sleeping position.

 

  • Sitting: You first relax your feet on the floor and lean forward slightly your chest. Then you can either relax your elbow on your knee, your arms on a table, or relax your neck and muscle in your shoulder.
  • Standing: There are two different standing positions. First is standing against the wall with your feet open with the shoulder width. Lean your shoulder forward slightly and let your arms dangled in front of you. You can use the assistance of a piece of furniture by resting your hands/elbows on that one and relieve any tense on your neck and shoulder muscle. You can also rest your head on one of your forearms.
  • Sleeping: You can just lie down on your side with your elevated head and a pillow between your knees or on your back with one beneath your knees. Remember to keep your back straight.

 

 

  1. Diaphragmatic breathing


This technique is called deep breathing or abdominal breathing. It is best effective for those who have COPD.

  • First you should lie down on your back with your hands relaxing on your abdomen.
  • Take a deep breath via your nose, extend your belly while filling your lungs with air.
  • Hold the breath for some seconds before you release the air from your lungs through your month.
  • Apply this technique for 5 to 10 minutes and repeat it at least 2 to 3 times daily.

 

 

  1. Pursed-lips breathing


Pursed-lips breathing is an exercise that helps you breathe against resistance. This helps to keep your airway pathway open as they are more likely to close up while you exhale quickly.

Besides, this technique is extremely effective in decreasing your breathing rate as rapid respiration can lead to cellular oxygen deficiency and result in many serious problems.

Take a quick inhale through your nose. Then, exhale slowly as three times long as inhaling by you pursed lips. Repeat the breathing for at least 10 minutes. You should apply this method whenever you feel your dyspnea is about to occur.

 

 

  1. Steam Inhalation


Suffering from a respiratory issue and unable to decongest your nasal passages? Then steam inhalation is especially effective for you. The steam heat and moisture helps you to loosen and dilute excreted mucus to eliminate them easily.

–       Pour hot water and add some essential oil into a bowl.

–       Keep your face several inches above the bowl and cover your head with a towel.

–       Inhale deeply and exhale slowly for some minutes.

 

 

  1. Ginger


Ginger is considered to be an excellent expectorant that is helpful in clearing congestion. It also has certain ingredients that help prevent secreting mucus.

Moreover, ginger can be used as a prophylaxis for respiratory tract infections or sore throats, a very common disease during the cold weather.

You can drink a cup of ginger tea daily, add ginger to your dishes or chew directly a piece of ginger or ginger flavor candies to benefit from it.

  • I never knew that shortness of breath could be related to so many medical problems. I thought it was just something you had and had to live with. My problem is that I yawn all the time, and my doctor says it is because I don’t breathe correctly, that I’m not getting enough oxygen, deeply enough into my lungs. And when I lay on my back I snore because my tongue gets in the way. So I have to lay on my sides, which I have come to prefer anyway. But it’s you deep diaphragmatic breathing that I have to work on. I have to be conscious of my breathing and make sure I’m doing it correctly so that later on in life I don’t have more serious problems. I have tried steam inhalation when I have a cold and that has helped me tremendously. But I didn’t know about the ginger. I have candied ginger that I use for upset stomach, but didn’t know it was also good for clearing up mucus congestion, so I will have to try that for sure.

  • Would you do these exercises if you are having an asthma attack? Or in the middle of breathing difficulties because of allergies for example? Are they complimentary to medical treatment? I am a bit confused when you would use these exercises because if you were in a medical emergency for example, you’d be seeing a doctor. But, if you were being treated by a doctor are you saying these exercises would be good to do at the same time? Thanks.
