The number of health conditions among the aged has increased. This is because there is a significant increase in an aged population, backed by the advances in technology that supports longer life expectancy. They also have weakened immunity to fight diseases. It is essential to understand these health conditions, learn more about their symptoms, and find ways to prevent and live with them to promote healthy living. Therefore, this article explains some of the common health conditions that can be due to natural aging.

Arthritis is the breakdown of joint tissue to restrict body movement at these points, causing pain and inflammation. There are two types of arthritis; osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. The most common type of arthritis among the elderly is osteoarthritis. It results from wear and tear of joint tissue due to use for a long time.

Some of the common symptoms of arthritis include pain, tenderness, and stiffness in joints. Also, it can lead to restricted movements in the joints. Arthritis has no cure but can be treated by administering painkillers and corticosteroids to the victim.

Most of the elderly are blind, and it is because of age-related macular degeneration (AMD). The condition is characterized by deposits building up on the macular. These deposits can be due to abnormal blood vessels underneath the macular. It is the deposits that blur the victim’s vision.

Another cause of blindness among the aged is glaucoma. Here, the pressure is exerted on the optic nerve. Diabetes, specifically diabetic retinopathy, causes blindness among the aged by causing retina damage.

When treating blindness, the cause of the condition determines the treatment plan. For instance, eye drops, cataract surgery, or laser surgery can correct the condition. Regular check-ups are necessary for early detection of the condition before it gets worse.

Hypertension/High Blood Pressure

It is hard to realize that one suffers from hypertension unless it is in its late stages. Irregular heartbeat, severe headache and anxiety, and chest pain are common symptoms of hypertension.

Hypertension causes strain on some of the key body organs like the kidney, heart, and blood vessels. Therefore, it can lead to other conditions like heart disease, heart attack, heart failure, stroke, kidney disease, and vascular dementia.

Watching diet is one of the ways seniors can prevent hypertension. Rather than consuming more sugar and saturated fats, they ought to consume more fruits and vegetables. Engaging in physical exercise also keeps hypertension away. Nicotine elevates blood pressure. Therefore, the aged should completely avoid smoking.

There are health conditions that are associated with the aged. However, these conditions can be managed to sustain a long and healthy life. Some of these conditions do not have a cure, and management would be the best way to cope.
