Almost every woman experienced painful sensations and cramps during her periods at least once. These unpleasant sensations occur because of the uterus contractions that remove the lining from the uterus. These contractions can squeeze blood vessels and block the supply of oxygen. That’s why you can feel severe pain, which can also lead to nausea and headaches.

If the menstruation itself is a single cause of your unpleasant sensations, this kind of pain is called primary dysmenorrhea. But there are a lot of diseases (endometriosis, PID, fibroids, etc) that can worsen the severity of cramps. In this case, pain is considered secondary dysmenorrhea. In this article, we gathered home remedies and foods that help reduce menstrual pain.

Home remedies

If your menstrual pain is not aggravated with certain additional conditions, you can try some home remedies in order to relive craps.

1. OTC medications

OTC painkillers (paracetamol) and prescription painkillers (ibuprofen) can be used to reduce pain during menstruation. But you should remember that they could be used only for a short period of time because some painkillers can be addictive.

2. Warmth

A warmer applied to the pelvic area during your menstruation can relieve painful sensations. Warmth helps relax muscles and decrease cramping. If you don’t have a warmer, you can use a bottle with hot water.

3. Massage oils

Lavender and sesame oils can make your cramps less painful. Lavender oil has analgesic properties and sesame oil has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Apply one of these oils on the abdominal area to relieve pain and cramps.

4. Activity

Despite the fact that exercising during periods looks quite contradictory, mild activity enhances blood circulation in the pelvic area and this relieves cramps. Moreover, exercising helps to produce endorphins that are natural painkillers.

5. Orgasms

You may think that sex during menstruation is inappropriate but vaginal orgasms can relieve your menstrual cramps. The reality is that orgasm stimulates the production of endorphins and oxytocin that eliminate painful sensations.
