As you age, you undoubtedly notice various physical changes taking place. Whether this means having a few extra pounds around your midsection, noticing a few more gray hairs, or having some aches and pains after exercising that weren’t there only a few years ago, these and other changes are part of the aging process. However, you should also be paying attention to your vision as you age. Specifically, here are a few things to keep in mind to ensure your eyes stay as healthy as possible.

Hardening of Eye Lenses

Once you hit age 40 or so, you may start to notice you have more difficulty focusing on objects that are very close to you. A condition known as presbyopia, this simply means the lenses of your eyes are starting to harden. While this sounds serious, every adult experiences this, so chances are you don’t need to worry about it too much.

The Need for New Glasses

Whereas before you may have only needed reading glasses, you may now need to visit your eye doctor more frequently so that you can get a prescription for new glasses. Whether you have already been wearing glasses or have reached a point where they are necessary to complete day-to-day tasks, looking into new glasses or even ocular steroid treatment may be needed, especially as you reach age 50 and beyond.

Regular Eye Exams

As you age, it will be crucial you have regular eye exams with an optometrist. In doing so, your doctor can examine your eyes to look for signs of potentially serious conditions, such as glaucoma, macular degeneration, or cataracts. When detected early enough, conditions such as glaucoma can be managed and treated.

Diet and Exercise Matter

While you may think the foods you eat and the walking, running, and other exercises you do only benefit your muscles, the fact is diet and exercise play a big role in keeping your eyes healthy. By eating right and exercising, your blood pressure will likely remain low. As a result, you greatly reduce the chance of developing diabetes, which can be a contributing factor to macular degeneration and other eye ailments.

While aging is inevitable, having problems with your vision is not. By following the above-mentioned tips and also doing such things as not smoking, wearing sunglasses to protect against UV ray damage, and having an annual eye exam, your vision will be protected now as well as for the future.
