Oral surgery is excellent for treating a wide range of oral diseases that affects your jaws, gums, or teeth, and it comprises cutting into or removing part of the oral tissue. Avoid undertaking strenuous activities for at least a week after surgery. Physical exercises increase blood flow and dislodge the blood clot.  


You may use extra pillows for propping up your head before going to sleep. You may also use ice packs to the side of the face after surgery to subdue swelling and encourage recovery. You should apply the ice pack for 30 minutes at a time for at least 2 to 3 days. 

2. Stop Bleeding

Bleeding in the area of the wound is common after undergoing dental surgery. You can try biting down firmly on a gauze pad for 60 minutes to control bleeding. Ensure that you remain gentle while removing the gauze pad and use water to moisten the gauze if it seems to be stuck. 

Alternatively, you can bite on a moist tea bag for a half-hour as the tannic acid in tea can contract the blood vessels, thereby helping to develop clots. Another technique is to rinse your mouth with saline water starting a day after surgery to promote faster clotting. 

3. Eat Soft Foods

Hard, chewy, or spicy food can aggravate the wound of dental surgery. You must stick with a diet of soft foods until you fully recover. You must also avoid eating, drinking, or even talking for a few hours after the surgery. You must refrain from spitting, which can harm the wound.  


Soft and cold foods such as applesauce, oatmeal, or yogurt are excellent for recovering after dental surgery. You must try to avoid biting down on hard foods such as carrots or seeds with the surgery area for up to 8 weeks after the surgery. 4. Keep Your Mouth Clean

A clean mouth is less prone to infection due to a lesser opportunity for bacteria to thrive and fester. Brush your teeth gently with toothbrushes that have soft bristles. You should prevent rinsing of your mouth within 24 hours after dental surgery as vigorous mouth rinsing can irritate the wound and dislodge the clot. 

After a day of surgery, you must start rinsing your mouth with salt water after every meal and once every few hours by ensuring that rinsing removes all food particles from the mouth. Saltwater impedes the growth of bacteria and thereby reduces the risk of infection and aids in faster healing. 

5. Hydrate Yourself

Liquid foods have a much lower chance of disturbing your wound during consumption. However, you need to refrain from drinking the beverage through a straw as the suction force could harass the injury. Since it will be difficult to eat solid food in the initial days after surgery, you need to increase your liquid intake to make up for the lower consumption. 

Water is ideal than other sugary carbonated beverages for rapid recovery, especially in the initial 24 hours after surgery. You should also avoid hot drinks as it can burn the wound, which you may not be aware of due to the effect of dental sedation. Assure that you prevent dehydration by drinking plenty of liquid food. 

6. Refrain From Smoking And Drinking Alcohol

Avoid smoking or consuming alcohol for as long as possible after your dental surgery. Both smoking and drinking alcohol can slow down the healing process and can induce complications. Alcohol also interferes with the working of painkillers or antibiotic medication. 

Smoking also increases the risk of infections and can cause a dry socket in your mouth, which can cause the feeling of pain in your jaw, which may extend up to your ear. Smoking can also tremendously increase the sensation of pain after dental surgery. 


You can make a speedy recovery after dental surgery by following the instructions of your dentist or surgeon regarding the procedures you need to follow for post-surgery care.
