1. What You Can Do to Improve Your Balance
    2. Have you lately been noticing that you aren’t quite as steady as you move around? Well, this could be because your balance has diminished and your movements are not all that stable anymore. Now, balance is important for a great number of reasons but the most significant reason is safety.

  1. A lack of balance makes it quite easy to fall and, in turn, injure yourself. The chance of this happening increases considerably for individuals over the age of 65. So, as you can see, it is imperative that you begin to rectify the situation immediately. Here is how you can manage this:

    Identify the Causes

The first thing that you will need to do is to figure out what is causing the balance issues. This typically means a visit to the doctor’s as an unrelated condition may be involved. For instance, it is not uncommon to experience stability issues due to inner ear infections or a vitamin deficiency.

Balance issues can also be due to inactivity. Typically, if you don’t use the muscles associated with balance, then they will stop responding the way that you need them to.

So, for you to be able to regain proper movement, you will need to build up these muscles again. This is something that is relatively common among seniors who don’t move around too much.

    Understanding the Treatment

If it is discovered that you either have an infection or some kind of deficiency, you will be able to clear up the problem with medication or supplements. While the effects may not be immediate, you will find that your situation is greatly improved with time.

The doctor may also identify a delay in reactions as the reason that you have been taking a tumble. While there are exercises that can help with this, there is another factor to consider: sleep. By getting a good night’s sleep, you will be more alert and will have fewer balancing issues.

If muscle deterioration or disuse is to blame, there may be a few things prescribed. If there is something physically wrong with your feet, your doctor may ask you to use a walking cane. This will give you something to place your body weight on so that you are supported when moving around.

Regardless of whether you are provided with a walking cane, one thing is for sure – your medical practitioner will ask you to exercise more. This is the best way for you to strengthen your muscles and regain your balance.

    Building Up Your Balance

Since it has been established that exercise has a lot to do with balance, the next step is figuring out how to work the important muscles. Now, for older individuals, you have to be careful about the type of exercises that you do, particularly if your balance problems still persist.

This is why activities such as tai chi and yoga can greatly benefit this age group. It will help to gently build up the important muscles.

The good news is that walking more can also help improve your balance so you should try to fit in a daily walk. If it has been suggested, you should definitely take your walking cane with you on these treks to avoid any falls. Just remember to keep the cane on your strong side and lead with your weak side, if you have any physical difficulties.

If you don’t have any such issues, you can try exercises that are slightly more strenuous. Squats and lunges are good for strengthening your muscles, and thus, improving your balance. If you are truly serious about improving your dexterity, ballet is also an excellent activity for this purpose.

As you can see, poor balance doesn’t have to rule your life. As long as you take the right measures and precautions, you will be able to move around quickly and safely once more.
