Many people ask me time and time again “what should I expect from a homeopathic session?”
It’s in fact a very valid question.
When one goes to their primary doctor, they simply go for the treatment for one or two symptoms or conditions. Except for critical situations, it may not such a complex process to figure out a diagnosis for the patient.
In general, when one wants to see a health professional, whether conventional or alternative, the focus is either on a physical condition or a psychological one.
This is where a homeopathic session sets itself apart from everyone else.
Before The Session
Before actually starting a session, many licensed homeopaths will ask the client to fill out some forms.
These usually include a health inventory form as well as a consent form. Usually, they can be filled out beforehand and handed in person or through email.
As a homeopath, I prefer to do this through email as it’s easier and quicker for both the client and myself.
A health inventory form asks for basic background information as well as medical history, chief complaints, and other relevant details to the client’s life.
Consent forms vary depending on the area that homeopaths practice in.
In the United States, homeopaths use consent forms for legal purposes in order to demonstrate that they are not claiming to act as a medical doctor (which they don’t anyways) among other things.
Homeopaths usually take in clients in either their home or office. Alternatively, homeopaths nowadays take in clients online via video chat.
That way, clients can see their homeopath in the comfort of their own home or office.
First sessions tend to last for at least 1-2 hours. The fees a professional homeopath charges for a first session varies; the range is on average between $50-$300.
During the Session – The Chief Complaint
Most new clients of homeopathy tend to have a lack of knowledge about homeopathy.
Once that is covered, then the actual session begins.
Both the homeopath and the client tend to discuss the chief complaint of the client, which is the issue that that brought them to the homeopath in the first place.
This could be mental, emotional, or physical.
For this and other issues that arise, the homeopath will ask specific details such as
- what makes the condition better or worse?
- how does it feel? how exactly is this condition expressed?
- what are the symptoms around the condition?
- when did it start?
- what happened?
- what makes it better or worse?
And much much more.
The homeopath will ask for very specific details in order to know best which individualized remedy best fits the person as a whole.
As I always say: 10 people can have an ailment but may receive 10 different homeopathic remedies depending on how it’s expressed.
Homeopaths will also check out a client’s other issues in a similar manner also.
Getting To Know YOU – The Past
Besides for the mental, emotional, and physical symptoms affecting the client, homeopaths will look into a client’s past history in detail, starting from early childhood until the present day.
This will include life changing experiences and incidents that have changed the course of a person’s life in all ways, whether it’s the mind or body.
All of this is done to better understand when was the last time you were healthy and to better understand the person themselves.
This is probably the strongest aspect of the entire case, as the homeopath has a clear understanding of the constitution of the person and his/her case.
This is not just about clients “spilling their guts out” to the homeopath. The client has an opportunity to speak out their true feelings and to discover their real selves. This is part of the process of the client being empowered in their own wellbeing.
Clients have noted to me numerous times how it felt great to let out their true emotions, issues, and feelings that they might otherwise not be able to in a different setting.
Getting To Know More About Yourself
Besides for the deeper issues mentioned in the last section, the homeopath will get to know you better in more ways.
The homeopaths will ask more questions regarding a person’s lifestyle and everyday life.
This includes things such as:
- a brief rundown on general physical issues.
- physical energy.
Other information may be asked also, but these are the lifestyle questions usually asked.
The End of the Session
After gathering enough information regarding the client and his or her complaints, two things may happen.
If the case is clear enough that the homeopath already knows which homeopathic remedy works best, the homeopath will inform the client of the remedy choice.
If not, the homeopath will work on the client’s case after the client leaves. The homeopath will typically inform the client of his or her remedy choice within 1-2 days.
Follow-up appointments tend to occur within 4-6 weeks after the first homeopathic session and taking the prescribed remedy.
In between that time, the client and homeopath will speak at least once just to check in on the client’s healing progress.
Follow-ups are generally much shorter than the first session; they usually last between 10-45 minutes. The fees are also much less as they are generally between $40-$150 per follow-up.
During the follow-ups, homeopaths examine the progress of the client since they last met. They also look to see if any new symptoms or ailments have arisen.
After the follow-up, several things may change depending on the client’s progress. The client may:
- not need to take the remedy again.
- need to retake the remedy (and sometimes with a different potency).
- need to take a new remedy.
What To Expect From A Homeopathic Session
Very simply put, what you as a client should expect from a homeopathic session is to be heard.
You have a very rare and special chance to express everything and anything that is affecting your life in any way possible, in order to return back to a state of total health.
This means to reach a state of complete resonance with yourself on all levels – mentally, emotionally, and physically.
Not only can you “let out” all that’s bothering you in life, but you have a chance to do something about it homeopathically.
In other words, the goal of these sessions is to empower you and for you to take control of your health!
The homeopath is simply the messenger that’s there to help you reach that ideal mindset and state of being.
As a student-homeopath who also has been a client seeking help before, I can definitely attest to this type of life-changing experience.
