Eczema is characterized by breakouts that vary by location, severity and frequency. The types of eczema vary, but the types of remedies are similar and guaranteed to work at reducing symptoms. Review the 4 different ways that you should manage this condition.
Moisturize Your Skin Often
Preventing an eczema flareup is the best treatment possible. Since that is not always guaranteed, moisturize your skin at least twice a day. This step is more effective after you bathe or shower because the pores are open. Using too much oil is not recommended because it clogs the skin, causing acne. Be sure to avoid products that may contain skin irritants.
Use Anti-Itch Remedies
Itching is a common symptom of atopic dermatitis disease. Scratching provides only temporary relief. For relief that lasts all day, apply an anti-itch cream or spray that contains effective active ingredients, such as diphenhydramine, hydrocortisone or menthol. For most users, their relief lasts for a few hours, and the product needs to be reapplied two or three times a day.
Use Moisturizing Soaps
Soap is a common irritant that easily strips moisture from the skin. Use a mild soap that is preferably all natural with few or no artificial chemicals. Washing your skin is not as harsh as using the wrong soap. Many bath soaps are made of the same ingredients as dishwasher and laundry detergents. Using a detergent soap can strip nearly all of the moisture from your skin, which leaves it dry and aggravates your itching and skin flaking.
Choose Medicated Balms, Creams and Lotions
You do not have to use regular creams and lotions only. There are eczema creams that are specially formulated to treat the symptoms of itching, rashes, blistering and inflammation. Some products contain topical steroids, like corticosteroids or hydrocortisone, that reduce most or all flareup symptoms. Medicated products are highly concentrated and usually require once-daily applications. A strong steroid, such as clobetasol propionate, is available to treat intense, frequent symptoms. Oral steroids are used in the worst cases and should be taken carefully due to side effects.
There are various types of eczema that have different causes from stress to the environment. For most people, it is a chronic skin condition that creates dry, itchy, reddened or scaly skin. Find skincare treatments that are guaranteed to provide effective, long-lasting results. You may not discover a cure within a cream or balm, but you will find your skin easier to manage throughout the day and night.
