Keeping your skin and hair looking young doesn’t have to include a high price tag or a lot of chemicals. There are daily healthy habits that you can get into that will protect your body from the inside out as you fight the signs of aging.

Inside and Out

Olive oil is a wonderful product to cook with. Because it’s high in compounds that can increase your collagen levels, your skin will have more elasticity and maintain firmness, rather than falling into wrinkled grooves, for more years than a diet high in animal fats.

This product can also be used as a topical. If you wear makeup, remove it with just a bit of olive oil on a cotton ball. If you don’t wear makeup, apply a dab of olive oil to your ring fingers and gently massage it into your skin for five minutes before rinsing your face with cool water. Your ring fingers are naturally a bit weaker, so the pressure of your massage will be lighter.

Finally, you can mix a bit of olive oil into one-quarter cup of brown sugar and apply this to your skin as a body polish. Mix it in small batches and scrub yourself from chin to toes with this product before rinsing it away. Unlike nutshells and other abrasives commonly found in body scrubs, brown sugar will break down under pressure and not irritate your skin.

Foods That Help You Manage Stress

Stress is very hard on your body and can prematurely age your face. It can even be part of what causes hair loss. While it may be tempting to dive headfirst into a bag of chips when life gets hard, this will only comfort the angst in your head; it will be doubly hard on your body.

If you have to have something sweet, fix yourself a bowl of oatmeal before bed. Add some berries for sweetness and linger over the scent.

For those who need something salty when stressed, grab some nuts. The oil is good for your skin and your body, and the crunch will soothe your worries.

In the event that you’re completely scattered and don’t know what to do, fix a cup of tea. Focus on the steam, the scent, the flavor, and then focus on getting to the bottom of the cup. Clearing your mind can really help you allow good decisions to come to the surface.

When You Can’t Sleep

The best skincare products in the world won’t help you look your best if you’re tired. Insomnia and the inability to fall asleep and stay there can really play havoc with your overall health and make you look exhausted. Worse, a sleepy brain makes bad decisions about food and activities.

Enjoy a cup of Greek yogurt, unsweetened, before bed to help you fall asleep and stay there. Greek yogurt contains tryptophan, which tells you it’s time to rest. Milk can do the same for those who can tolerate it. A cup of unsweetened chamomile tea can help, as can a bowl of warm oatmeal.

Essential oils can be a wonderful addition to your bedtime routine. If you’ve followed all the sleep hygiene rules so that your bedroom is

  • dark
  • cool
  • free of electronic screens
  • quiet

and you’re still not sleeping, try a spray of lavender room freshener around your bed before you crawl in to snuggle down. If you struggle with nighttime pain, consider adding a sublingual dose of CBD oil to soothe your brain and help you drop deeply into sleep.

Manage and Monitor Your Thoughts

Dissatisfaction can have a big impact on your thoughts, and these will often show up on your face. Meditating is a natural way to reduce your feelings of stress and any dissatisfaction you may be suffering.

If your meditation practice is rather fractured, consider using a timer. Until the beeper goes off, you don’t have to think about anything at all. Use an essential oil or a scented candle such as sandalwood to help you focus your mind and release sources of unhappiness that are adding years to your face.

Not everyone gets to grow old. Visualize yourself as a happy, confident, and independent oldster. Where will you live? What will you do on a daily basis? How will you give back to your world? Now focus on habits and products to support that remarkable person.
